The most important part of a well-planned curriculum is the teacher themselves planning instead of finding a pre-packed curriculum (Miller, 1996). The problem with pre-designed curriculums is that there is not universal correct package because every single classroom across America is unique with different students and needs to be met (Miller, 1996). Though it argues strongly against planning curriculum based on someone elses prepackaged ideas, it does mention that using a preset lesson plan or activity as the basic guideline for inspiration for a teachers planned curriculum is acceptable after they have adapted that basic idea and modified it to fit in to the needs of their particular classroom (Miller, 1996).

This chapter gives many ideas and guidelines for teachers to consider when designing their curriculum. It first gives a basic framework to follow when designing curriculum that involves selecting a theme, brainstorming ideas, and identifying appropriate approaches (Miller, 1996). It discusses the importance of children being able to socialize with each other and how that should be part of their curriculum for their own social development as well as they respond more positively to their peers and are capable of nurturing each other (Miller, 1996). The author warns the reader that sometimes teachers can be too child-centered and focus a little too much on their interests (Miller, 1996). However, the author stresses at the same time the need to be child-centered and teaching to the interest of the child (Miller, 1996). The reason for both of these claims is that teachers need to remember that they have much to teach in core standards, language, literacy, and many other subjects and should find the right balance between student focused interests and teaching these important subjects (Miller, 1996). This chapter explores the importance of including in a teachers curriculum reading, dramatic play, social development, physical development, motor skills, and cognitive development and also gives advice on how to incorporate these into the curriculum (Miller, 1996). Above all, this chapter stresses the importance of reaching out to every child, learning their interest and needs, and adapting curriculum accordingly (Miller, 1996).”
