For this component of the assignment, you write two letters to one elected official (the two letters go to the same official, and will be in a single document) about the issue you are researching.
When picking an official to whom you’ll write, consider the nature of the issue and which level of government (federal, state, local) and which branch of government is in a position to affect policy in the ways you suggest. The government official doesn’t have to be an actual (named) official, but the level of government and the type of government office (legislative or executive) need to be clear. For example, the letter could be to: Massachusetts State Senator.
To help you construct the arguments in the letters, you should read through your own research summary postings, in addition to the postings of your fellow students that are in the same issue category as yours, and make use of the sources that you and your classmates gathered.
Each letter must take opposing positions on the issue and include the best arguments and evidence for each of these two sides. You don’t actually send either of the letters (though you may do so, of course); you simply upload the two letters in a single saved word document.
When writing your letters in a word document, do the following:
-Write in the name (if you have it, not required) and title of the elected official you are writing to (for instance, State Senator)–you don’t need the full address; but the type of official, level of government–local, state, or federal–and branch of government–legislative or executive–needs to be clear
-Follow the instructions in the issue assignment description as to the content and substance of your letters
-Write in a clear, organized and grammatically correct manner.
-Write up both letters in a single word document–you will only upload one document.
-Each letter will be about one page long (double-spaced)
