- Navigate to the threaded discussion and respond to the discussion questions/prompts:
- What was Jesuss approach to truth in the passage cited for this week? How does he use it to respond to Satan and the lies and twisted truths being presented to Him? How is this approach important or helpful to you as a Christian social worker responding to moral or ethical issues in the field?
- Oxford Dictionarys 2016 word of the year was post-truth an adjective defined as relating to or denoting circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief. Describe how you see this phenomena at work in yourself, the culture around you or in social work circles. Be specific and give at least one example of how a post truth approach influences treatment, planning conversations, policy or how services are delivered.
- What happens when a person or culture gives up the idea of objective truth? What becomes the guiding factor or factors? How might it affect peoples lives and well-being or society as a whole for truth to only be individually determined?
- Discuss the idea of whether people really know whats best for themselves. Argue for one reason why this idea is valid or helpful and one reason why it is not.
- The video this week presents ideas for having rational conversations about truth. Identify at least one idea or strategy from the video you could use as a social worker in managing truth in light of cultural pressures. Give an example and how you might apply it in a real world setting.
