Women Studies Assignment Objectives: To apply theories of gender representation to a movie scene, to engage deeply with theoretical formulations, and develop skills in film interpretation and written argument. Assignment: For this assignment, you will select a film or television episode and choose a 3-5 minute sequence and analyze gender and the gaze within it. In your paper, you will do both of the following: 1) Draw upon one of the gaze theories we have studied to perform an analysis of the representation of gender and the gaze in your selected scene. You may choose to work with the male gaze (Mulvey, Berger), the queer gaze (Evans and Gamman), the transgender gaze/look (Halberstam), the oppositional gaze (hooks, Hobson). In order to analyze the way the gaze is working in your scene, be sure that you demonstrate a strong grasp of how the gaze is theorized in the reading of your choice. Then consider whether your scene fits into the structure described in the reading. Does the scene provide a great example of your gaze theory? Does the scene complicate or completely undermine it? Is there another way we might interpret the sequence? How does the gaze theory you are working with help us think about gender (and its intersections with race, class, sexuality, disability, etc) and its construction in the media? 2) Draw upon Judith Butler’s “Performative Acts and Gender Constitution” to perform an analysis of gender in your sequence. In particular, consider how gender is “performed” or “constructed” in the scene. Do you see a use of masquerade or performativity? Or does the scene seem to suggest that there is no masquerade, and that gender is inherent or natural? Be sure to use specific examples from the sequence and to quote from your chosen readings to support your claims. Writing strategy: This paper, then, should construct a clear and well-formulated argument. Don’t just answer the questions posed above; create an argument with a central point about gender representation. The strongest papers will interpret these sequences with nuance, and point out areas where the scene you have selected conforms or FAILS to conform with the theories we’ve studied. Maybe there’s another way we should be reading these sequences? But be sure to back up your ideas with evidence! Your thesis statement should provide a succinct claim about the overall point your paper will make on this topic. The rest of the paper should provide evidence by way of logical explanation, examples, and authoritative quotes to support that claim.
