Ed Schein presents a solid representation of the planned culture change process at Beta, however this mainframe company was already in early to mid life when the change process was begun. Yes, they were relatively young compared to an IBM and changing – facing both “head winds” and ‘tail winds” as the first wave of dot coms emerged, but start-ups of that era are in a unique space. Known as  both the “technical and social” cultures, as well as, the business model has shifted dramatically from the Beta example. The post dot.com startup’s culture challenges needs more coverage than that of the Corporate Culture Survival Guide offers.

First and foremost, venture funding companies are much more savvy than they were in the dot com era, particularly in providing management support and insight to their venture companies. Many of the big name VCs now have former CEOs of start ups as partners, which provides first hand experience to the next wave of entrepreneurs.

Sequoia Capitals Alfred Lin is an example.

The startup company is highly dependent on the beliefs, values and behavior of the leader/founder.  Brian Chesky, one of the three founders of Airbnb is a marvelous example of the power of personal values toward the intentional creation of culture.

The interview with Brian Chesky by Alfred Lin at Stanford energetically portrays the intentional process of embedding values to create the Airbnb culture. The first 11:28 minutes are a review of what culture is by Lin if you want to fast forward to go directly to the Chesky interview. You can go back and watch the first 11 minutes.

Union Square Ventures partner, Fred Wilson, who blogs every day, hosts an annual CEO Summitor bootcamp for their portfolio companies to share lessons learned, both success and failures. Wilson not only demonstrates the culture of USV daily through blogging, he is transparent in what they do for their portfolio companies.

The digital context of the early stage company, todays startup, both defines and is shaped by its leader/ founders entrepreneurial character.

I recall BJ Fogg, an academic at Stanford who first began studying the effect of Facebook and created a doctoral program at Stanford in persuasive technology stating his students evaluated Facebook usage in its early days differently than he did despite only a ten year age gap. The point here is that the technology available for the startup today is far outpacing societys cultural grasp of the impacts, as well as, the laws and regulations.

For the Forum discussion consider the societal context of culture and how it may or may not challenge the values of the startup. Airbnb was breaking ground by facilitating millions of people to stay in other peoples homes.

What other startups core values are transparent REST OF THE CONTENT IS IN THE FILES ATTACHED.

Question to answer:

For the Forum discussion consider the societal context of culture and how it may or may not challenge the values of the startup. Airbnb was breaking ground by facilitating millions of people to stay in other peoples homes.

Compare Beta’s issues to those of Uber, Twitter, Amazon, and Google. All heavy with software engineers, but what are the sub cultural differences that need to be addressed, if were the consultant? What aspects of the Beta planned change effort might work if applied to these companies? What do you think will not work?

Recent events have literally challenged social media tech startups to their very core. External events, laws and regulations continually pressure core values.

What other startups’ core values are transparent in the way they conduct business?
