OPTION 1

Read the assigned chapter, “Law Making and Law Breaking in an Epidemic,” from Leslie Reagan’s Dangerous Pregnancies: Mothers, Disabilities, and Abortion in Modern America (University of California Press, 2010), and write on the following topic.

Topic: Reagan’s book provides an in-depth review of the controversies in the late 1950s, 1960s, and early 1970s surrounding the legal and cultural status of abortion in the United States. Famously, the landmark U.S. Supreme Court case of 1973 Roe v. Wade, guaranteed a woman’s right to choose an abortion. The book details many of the factors involved in changing American views on abortion leading up to Roe v. Wade.

The question you need to answer is this: How and why did the majority of Americans ultimately embrace a woman’s right to abortion by the early 1970s?  In your essay, please explain your sense of the various issues and parties involved in the debates about therapeutic abortion as well as abortion in general. Finally, your essay should draw not only on Reagan’s chapter and the Roe v. Wade case, but also address the importance of the U.S. Supreme Court case of 1964 Griswold v. Connecticut.
