Addressing Standards and Outcomes
Design your own set of learning outcomes. You will design these outcomes based on all of the courses you have taken for your degree program up to this point. The purpose of these outcomes is to guide your internship experiences and to determine the types of observable proofs and artifacts that you will provide in your portfolio. These proofs and artifacts should demonstrate that you are prepared to embark on a specific career path in the field of early childhood care and education.
Your self-developed learning outcomes function in the same way as the standards that the authors discuss will help you to throughout How to Develop a Professional Portfolio, 6th Ed. Therefore, Chapters 3, 4, 5, and Appendix A in the textbook complete this exercise. Please refer to these chapters and appendix as you complete this assignment. Refer directly to the textbook, in your own writing, as needed. Cite appropriately.
The purpose of this exercise is to help you select the standards around which you will develop your portfolio. It will also help you to use your self-developed learning outcomes with standards that are developed by professional organizations in your field. You will write a rationale for the standards and outcomes that your portfolio will address. Finally, you will begin brainstorming artifacts that you might use to address each of the standards that your portfolio will address.
This exercise has three parts. Please complete all three parts before submitting your assignment.
Part One: Select the Standards Paste your self-developed learning outcomes at the top of your assignment draft.
Skim Chapter 3 and review the NCATE-Affiliated Professional Organizations listed in Appendix A to determine which standards best apply to your professional path and, ultimately, to your portfolio. You will need to use the Internet to access the websites that are referenced in the textbook. These websites will include the standards provided by each organization. Your primary focus should be National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) standards for your portfolio.
List the specific standards that you believe your portfolio can and should address. You are expected to cover 5 to 7 NAEYC standards.
Part Two: Write a Rationale for Standard Selection (250-500 words) Beneath the lists that you constructed for Part One of this assignment, write a rationale for the standards you chose. This rationale should include answers to the following questions:
Why write a standards-based portfolio?
How do the standards that you selected apply to your professional experiences and goals?
How do the standards that you selected compare and contrast with your self-developed learning outcomes?
Who is the audience for your portfolio? How will this audience respond to the learning outcomes and standards that you selected for your portfolio?
Part Three: Brainstorming Artifacts (List 2-3 possible artifacts for each outcome/standard.) Skim Chapters 4 and 5 in How to Develop a Professional Portfolio, 6th Ed. to get an idea of artifact possibilities for your portfolio. An artifact provides “tangible evidence, such as professional work samples, videos, letters, student products, or certificates that indicates achievement of a goal or the attainment of knowledge and skills.†For each of your self-developed learning outcomes and standards that you chose, list 2-3 possible artifacts that reflect, in observable ways, your mastery of that outcome or standard.
