Assignment – Ai Weiwei, Art Uniting the East with the West
As discussed in the latter part of our Lesson, the contemporary Chinse artist Ai Weiwei creates works that
are socially, culturally, and politically critical of the Chinese government, industry, corporations, and other
current issues and events.
ASSIGNMENT: 500-750 word Response paper.
Start by exploring Ai Weiwei’s website (if available – subject to Chinese censorship) and looking through
each of the links provided. You will also discover that there is much more information available on the
internet, and your research is not limited to links below:

Ai Weiwei and Human Flow

Ai Weiwei Drifting
Now, after learning about some of the art projects Ai Weiwei has created from the above sites (and other
sources you may explore), pick one specific artwork or installation created by Ai Weiwei and report on the
artwork, his purpose or message, and the public’s reaction to it.
Write a 500-750 word paper that reports what you discover.
Your introductory paragraph should identify the work you are reporting on including the artist’s name, the
title of the piece (in italics), the date it was created, and its materials.
Include a thesis statement in your opening paragraph – this should be a statement identifying the purpose
of the piece you chose. The rest of your paper should discuss specifics of the artwork and how they support
or accomplish his purpose. You might want to explore the choices the artist made to help get the message
across to the viewer.
You should include installation location (if important), circumstances or events that the artist is reacting to
(if any), the purpose or message the artist is trying to convey, and the reaction of the public to the art and
its message. However, this is not asking for your opinion – so avoid commenting on what you like or dislike
about the piece. Also avoid flattery or hyperbole – don’t write “beautiful” “masterpiece” etc.

If you expand your research beyond the above listed web links, be sure to list the additional sources at the
end of your report (URL addresses accepted or more formal style – MLA, APA, etc.). DO NOT PLAGIARIZE!
