Part 1: Proposal and Annotated Bibliography (90 points)
Proposal
Write a 1-page Proposal for your Research-Based Literary Analysis. Your Proposal should include the following:
  • The primary text from class you will interpret in your literary analysis
  • A description of your project
  • A working thesis

Annotated Bibliography
Submit an Annotated Bibliography including four promising academic secondary sources (like a peer-reviewed scholarly journal article or a chapter in an academic book study) in MLA or APA format with one to two paragraphs summarizing each source and responding to each source. You will use these sources in addition to your primary text (the piece of literature from class that you are studying) and the Bible. Each entry should include the following:
  • A bibliographic entry in MLA format
  • A summary of the source’s main argument
  • A summary of one to three salient subpoints in the source’s argument
  • Your response to each source

Part 2: Final Project Draft Due and SmartThinking Report (45 points)
Write a 6-page minimum draft of your research-based literary analysis in MLA format (Works Cited is required but is not counted in the total pages), submit it to SmartThinking, and submit your SmartThinking Feedback to Blackboard.

Part 3: Final Project: Research-Based Analysis (250 points) (Critical Assignment)*
Write a research-based literary analysis interpreting the role of the Christian imagination in one of the Christian Classics studied in our class. There are many directions you can take your final paper, and you may decide to look at Christian allegory, spiritual symbolism, the ethical and moral vision of imaginative Christian literature, adaptation of secular sources with a sacred focus, worldview, or Sub-Creation. Your literary analysis should incorporate and respond to critical voices and also use textual evidence and close reading to support your interpretation. While I recommend focusing only on one primary text for your paper, you may focus on up to two primary texts (one of which must be from our class reading).

  • Page/Formatting Requirement: 7-9-page research-based literary analysis in MLA (Works Cited is required but is not counted in the total pages)
  • Source requirements: 1 primary source, the Bible and/or a theological text by the primary text author, and 4 scholarly sources (for instance, a peer-reviewed journal article or a chapter from an academic book)
