Final Exam – HIST109 – Fall 2021

***Please, note that there are TWO prompts to complete for this exam!!!***

Critical Analysis 3 (Prompt 1)

Directions: In 1,200-1,500 words, please respond to the prompt below. Your answer should employ a roughly 50/50 balance between evidence from the course lectures and the assigned readings. This Critical Analysis is assessing your ability to analyze the material from only module 3 (i.e., weeks 11-16). Please use only course materials in your essay. Outside materials are not allowed.

In your answer, you should include evidence from multiple lectures and readings in order to demonstrate fluencywith the overall questions and frameworks of the module. Your answer must be formatted in 12-point Times New Roman double-spaced formatting.

In terms of citation, you are not required to cite course lectures. You do, however, need to include an in-text parenthetical citation when you reference the assigned readings, either in the form of a direct quotation or paraphrasing. The in-text citation should include the author’s last name and the relevant page number, i.e. (Morgan 3). If there is no listed author, use the first two three words of the title instead, i.e. (Popul Vuh, 4). Please submit your document as a .docx or .pdf file (no .pages!!!)

Prompt: Throughout this module, we assessed the causes of the Civil War, everyday lived experiences during it, and the era of Reconstruction in the decades following it. In particular, we examined the extent to which the Civil War and its aftermath expanded the idea of the American nation to include people of non-European descent.

With this in mind, how did the Civil War represent a challenge to the American nation, i.e., who counts as “the people?”, and to what extent did the decades following the Civil War change who counted as “the people” in America?

Course Reflection (Prompt 2)

Directions: In 400-500 words, please respond to the prompt below.

Prompt: Reflect back on the course and choose two specific things you learned in this course that you found particularly interesting or memorable that have impacted the way you see the world. These things can relate to themes, texts, visual materials, or historical processes, but they must be specific (i.e., “religion” or “race” are too broad) and you must explain why these things were particularly meaningful to you.
