instructor’s Blackboard Turnitin EXCEPT if you are
in Nick Mason’s sections.

1. You are an abolitionist writing an editorial for a newspaper
before the Civil War. Address all of the following: Southern
defenses of slavery, actual slave experiences, and your own
justification for how, and when, slavery should be abolished.
Your thesis statement will state your position on slavery and
how you think slavery should end (immediate, gradual, and/or
colonization).
2. It is the 1830s, and you are a journalist writing an editorial
that defends Native American rights. Address all of the
following: confiscation of native land (through treaty or
warfare), native resistance and native accommodation to
government policies and to the encroachment of white settlers.
Length: 5 pages, double-spaced, 12 pt font. Approximately 1500
words.
Sources:
Documents in Of the People and in Sources for Of the People,
information in Of the People, and Prof. Branson’s lectures.
Although you should not rely exclusively on the documents,
they should be a significant part of the evidence you use to
support your position.
How to cite your sources:
Use parenthetical citations. Put the page number if it is from Of
the People. Put the document title as listed in the syllabus. Write
Branson Lecture with the lecture title you are citing from my
class lecture. For example:
• Textbook citation: Of the People p, 45
• Document citation: Granada 1.3
• Lecture citation: Forging a National Republic
