Assignment: Chooseone of the options below and write a focused analysis of the literature. Yourpaper should present a strong, well-argued thesis that is supported throughoutyour essay with strong evidence from the text(s). Be careful to analyze andinterpret rather than simply listing off examples that seem to prove yourpoint. Look for meaning in the lines that you quote and to which you refer.
This assignment will be graded according to the following:proper use of grammar, sentence structure, and mechanics; a strong argumentthat is supported by evidence from the lit; strong analysis and interpretationof textual evidence; development of ideas; correct use of MLA styledocumentation.
1) Analyze either Quicksandor the Edgar Allan Poe short stories through the lens of psychoanalytic theory.
2) Write an analysis that illustrates how Quicksand can be read through two ormore lenses: psychoanalysis and Critical Race Theory.
Whichever topic youchoose, you should be sure to do the following:
Define the critical lens through which you areanalyzing the literature. In other words, spend some time explaining what itmeans to analyze something as a race critic or a psychoanalytic critic.
Apply that lens to the literature. This meansthat the focus of your essay should be on analysisa very specific one. How areyou interpreting the text? Situate yourself in one of these theoretical campsand read the literature as if you were a card-carrying member.
Use evidence!!! Its not enough to make a claim;you must prove it.
Use MLA to the best of your ability. This means:
Using quotation marks around any 2+ consecutivewords taken from the text
Using in-text parenthetical citations
Completing a full Works Cited entry for alltexts used in the paper
No outside sources are allowed for thisassignment (with the exception Tyson).
