Argumentative Final Paper

(2-3 pages, double-spaced, 12 -point font, use academic voice)

Select an issue and argue your conclusion persuasively.  You will use research to help you form and support this position.

Requirements :

  1. Pick an issue that you can write about within 2-3 pages.  You don’t want a topic that is too large (like Global Warming or Terrorism). Narrow down your topic. For example, you could argue for change in legislation regarding emissions or advocate in your essay for a particular type of renewable energy (advocating for its benefits and countering an argument against it).

  1. You are trying to argue a point (your conclusion) in this paper. Remember to include reasons and evidence that will support your conclusion.  Each paragraph should move your argument forward and contain a claim that is supported by evidence. You want to support your main argument with quotes from experts, statistics, rational arguments, or some other supportive material.  You MUST include at least three (3) sources from reputable, relevant, and recent sources. The majority of your sources (2) should be found through the Mercy College library database search, one of those being a scholarly source, like a peer-reviewed journal article.

  1. Think about the opposing view when writing this essay–what arguments would the opposing view make?  Take those into consideration when writing this essay.  You do not want to argue both sides, but rather, address one of the counter arguments in your own argument. You job is to argue why your position is correct over the opposing position.

  1. Do not be afraid to challenge conventional positions or beliefs.  Whether or not I agree with your position will not impact your grade.

  1. You will need to use MLA documentation style and include a Works Cited page. Refer to Mercy College Library “Cite Your Sources” Page found here: https://libguides.mercy.edu/citing-sources/mla

  1. This essay should have a descriptive title at the top of the first page and MLA Header on the top left of the first page. There is no need to include a title page, abstract, or running header for this paper.

Submission of this final work is worth 15 grade percentage points.
Inquiry Narrative Prompt
(min. 1 page, double-spaced, 12 pt. font)

An Inquiry Narrative is a metacognitive reflection on one’s experience. In this case, it refers specifically to one’s experience writing the Argumentative Final Paper. The general prompt for this Inquiry Narrative is: Tell me the story of your paper writing process.

The Inquiry Narrative can include aspects of the writing process including, but not limited to source acquisition and evaluation, the creation of a “hook” or transitions, the development of specific rhetoric, guiding questions and their evolution, central values and their origination, or changes that occurred between the pitch and the final product.

You may also use the questions below to guide your narrative. Your narrative should be in paragraph format (not question-answer).

Nine Guiding Questions

1. Describe the topic and the “issue” that you chose to explore in your final project.  What inspired you to choose this topic, and how did you come to focus on this particular issue?

2. What perceptions or assumptions did you have about this issue before you began the research process? On what were you basing these assumptions?  (Personal experience?  Observations?  Ideas you were taught at home, in school, through media, or other institutions?  Prior research?  A combination thereof?)

3. What themes or patterns did you see arise in your research and your own work, and how did this lead you to ask bigger questions about the topic for your research?

4.  What search terms/key words did you use in databases or search engines, and why did you choose those terms or phrases?

5.  Discuss at least 1 source that you came across while researching, but chose NOT to use, and why.  Consider currency, relevance, accuracy, authority, and purpose.  Next, discuss 1 source that you chose to further investigate and why.  Describe how this one passed the “CRAP” test!

6.  Paraphrase or quote an excerpt from each of your sources and explain how this information either made you think differently or heightened your awareness about the complexities of your issue.  Include a signal phrase and/or in-text citations in your paragraphs (MLA or APA format).

7.  Summarize the argument (or final conclusion) you’ve reached about your issue. How did your conclusion change through the paper writing process?

8.  In what ways are your conclusions still limited or imperfect?  What are some questions you still have about the topic?

9.  In at least a paragraph, reflect on your experience with the thinking processes that you underwent for this project, as they relate to reading, critical thinking, information literacy, and even writing.  What did you learn about the issue as well as your own strengths, assumptions, and challenges?
