Pick one of the philosophers we have studied so far:
Aristotle, Epicurus, Mencius, Hume, Rousseau, Kant, Helvtius, J.S. Mill, Berlin, Beauvoir
Additionally, you can also choose Plato, Confucius, Aquinas, Hobbes, Bentham, Marcel or Sartre.
Catholic students who would like to choose a catholic philosopher St. Thomas Aquinas and Gabriel Marcel would be good choices.
I want you to write an 11-page paper (no more than 14 pages ease, 11 is all that is required) detailing your chosen philosophers ethical philosophy as you understand it with some reflections on how it relates to your own view and/or critiques at the end. Try and be precise about their positions as well as concise. You will not have a lot of space so be as detailed as possible. You MUST cite a primary text from our readings (if they are not one of the philosophers we read take either a posted text, one I will give you, or a text not assigned that is in your textbook. Furthermore, I will expect you to have done extra readings for your chosen philosopher this means I want you to draw from the full version of the assigned texts as well as at least one other source your chosen philosopher has written. I also want one good secondary source to be cited as well. This can be SEP, a peer-reviewed journal article, or a book by a historian of philosophy or major philosopher which also discusses your chosen thinker’s ethics.
This means FOUR sources
The four sources are as follows: the text assigned for class, the rest of the complete text that was not assigned, one additional source from the thinker, and a good secondary source. You will lose points if one of these four are not present and you will fail if all of them are not present. Make sure to have a bibliography and that the citations follow your chosen citation style.
