Consider the following terms:
Catharsis : a purging or release of emotions in the audience caused by a willing suspension of disbelief. The audience must believe sufficiently in the emotions, relationships, and events on stage to have a connection and investment in the play. At the same time, the audience must maintain an aesthetic or artistic distance so they do not rush on stage to stop it change the characters actions.
