Use the attached reading to do the essay.

Length: 800+ wds

For the final paper, you will provide an extended reflection on a particular moment in our course readings and discussion that constituted the big AHA or WTF for you this semester. Consider the guiding framework laid out in our syllabus:

I want to stress at the outset: this will not be a class focused solely on constitutional law and Supreme Court decisions. This will be a class focused on a few stopovers in the long history of speechs governing freedoms and unfreedomsOur shared readings and discussions will address a long history of the relationship between speechits practice, institutionalization, and regulationand democratic life. Starting with free speechs (dual) role in Athenian democracy, we will move to debates over popular governance in the Early Republic, then to Supreme Courts liberalization of speech and press after World War I, and finally to contemporary theorizations of the public sphere.

This was quite a large arc to cover, but hopefully somewhere along the line our approach to free speechs long history offered at least one big moment for how you understand the relationship between speech and democratic life. Understandably, this may have been a big moment of claritysome conceptual puzzle-piece that provided major insightor an equally big moment of confusionsome unanticipated breakdown in your overall understanding of free speech. And, you may have had various, overlapping, and big AHAs and WTFs as each section of the course revisited or reconfigured something we had addressed earlier.

Which is all to say, I want you to pick ONE moment from our reading, activities, and discussions to focus on in your reflection: whatever, at the end of the day, you see as your Big AHA from this semester (or your BIG WTF). And, in reflecting on it, I want you to tell the story of this moment, its impact, and its aftermath. This will entail three components:

  •  Accounting for where you were BEFORE this big moment: in terms of the relevant topics, themes, and ideas that are addressed. For this, incorporate concrete experience, personal anecdote, other coursework, etc.
  •  Describing the big moment itself. This is effectively the same basic task as an AHA/WTF exercise, but in the context of the whole coursenot just a single reading. Transcribe the moment and reflect on either what exactly became clear (if AHA) or what exactly broke down (if WTF) in terms of how you understand the relationship between speech and democratic life.
  •  Explaining the AFTERMATH of the big moment. Finally, connect the big moment to some concrete experience afterwards in which this new understanding (or new confusion) played a central role. This may be a subsequent reading or course discussion, some connection that came up in everyday life, or encountering similar themes/topics in other coursework.

So, to recap, tell me a story about your Big AHA (or WTF) this semester. Show me where you were prior to this moment, explain the new clarity (or unclarity) you arrived at in this moment, and provide an account of how this big moment offered insight elsewhere: later in this course, in some other course, or in your everyday life.

Throughout, be specific and concrete: draw directly and substantively on our course materials, on relevant materials that provide evidence for connections you make outside of our class, and on your own writing and experience.
