Case Study Methodology and Approach

Purpose of these notes:

This document is intended to provide you with an outline of an acceptable approach for your use in case study analysis and case presentation (both written and discussion). Please follow the guidelines below, deviating from it when needed to address other issues. The approach is designed to develop a consistent method for you to use, to ensure you view the Abig picture@ as well as the details – in which we can get Alost@ very quickly and easily – of each case.

  1. First Class: Brief review of discussion leadership and student participative                                         responsibilities.

  1. Before class:

Preparation B Case analysis and review. Review and use sample case study write-up.

You are provided:

  • Written case in textbook, as a handout, on disk, online, or on paper document with necessary financial information
  • This handout for overall format and approach
  • A set of (or handout of) case-specific study questions, representing minimum requirements (provided when case is selected and assigned)

Required:       A written (typed and double-spaced) report, in the following general format:          (Note: This is a general business case outline.)

You may attach exhibits to your write-up such as Excel spreadsheets. However, you may also want to include calculations or tables in the body of the write-up, to display how you arrived at your answers or conclusions. See the sample case study write-up for format and content exemplars.

  1. In-class

Presentations (not every case, you will be instructed) – informal, each individual or group gets a turn

L        For initial cases – start with approximately 5 to 6 minute time frames

L        For initial cases – start with simple aids (white board, transparencies, a one page handout, when appropriate)

Discussions B to follow presentations and reports

–        Focus on clear identification of major issues, and discuss case issues, not personal styles (unless they are relevant).

–        Add understanding and value to what has been presented (reflective and critical thought).

–        Highlight skills and teaching concepts of the case (we, together, will learn as much in the class process as you did on your own or in your group/team, in a continuous learning environment).

–        Provide feedback for future performance improvement (where the opportunity exists).
