  • Choose one of the prompts (see over) and write an essay of approx. 2 pages arguing your position about your chosen media text.

You may choose to write about:

  • Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, The Great Gatsby (1925);
  • Baz Luhrman’s film, The Great Gatsby (2013);

                                                — OR

  • another novel, dramatic film, television show, or video game

(as long as it has a narrative structure and sustained characterization).

  • Make an outline of your essay first, making sure that you have two good textual examples for each main point of your argument.
  • Use a five or six paragraph structure in which the introductory paragraph includes your thesis statement and directional statement(s), and each body paragraph has a clear lead sentence.
  • Reminder: Do not provide plot summaries! You must provide a sustained argument answering one of the prompts, backed by carefully selected evidence and solid analysis of that evidence in support of your thesis.
  • You must use MLA citation methodology and include a properly formatted Works Cited list.
  • If you are writing about a visual medium you may include screenshots as figures in order to help highlight your analysis.

PROMPTS

  • The setting of a novel, play, film, tv show, or video game is the background by which readers come to know and understand the characters and the content creators’ ideas. For the work you have chosen, analyse the extent to which setting affects a character’s actions AND reveals a theme.
  • With reference to the work you have chosen, analyse the contribution to the development of theme of THREE of the following techniques: imagery, symbolism, parallelism, irony, contrast, or point of view.
  • Show how the author’s use of imagery and/or symbolism reveals theme OR reinforces aspects of character in the work you have chosen.
  • Through sharp contrast, a character foil enhances certain traits of a central character. Analyse how a secondary character operates as a foil and is employed to develop theme in the work you have chosen.
  • Show that a conflict based on morals or values is used to develop a central theme in the work you have chosen.

With reference to the work you have chosen, to what extent does isolation (physical, emotional or societal) cause a character to evaluate his or her moral beliefs or personal convictions?

  • In studying literature and the arts, we sometimes become aware of ironies that suggest complexities in the human situation. Analyse the validity of this statement as it applies to the work you have chosen
  • Adversity is the most important factor in shaping character and/or identity. Assess the validity of this statement with reference to the work you have chosen.
  • Analyse how the structure of a work studied in this course contributes to the development of a central theme.
  • To what extent do relationships contribute to the central character’s ultimate understanding of himself/herself in the work you have chosen?
  • To what extent does a central character’s struggle in a complex world reveal elements of human nature and/or the values of society in the work you have chosen?
  • Conflict arises when a character’s beliefs or desires are incompatible with the reality he or she faces. Judge how successfully an author expresses a central theme through the character’s response to such a conflict.
