20-Point Essay Questions (ca. 300-500 words ea.)

1.         Discuss the principal difficulties involved in governing a classical empire, and explain, in detail, the solutions devised in two established classical empires that we’ve studied. Your answer should address both differences and similarities. [Note: the Athenian empire and that of Alexander do not count as established classical empires and should not be used for this essay.]

2.         Identify and discuss at least two examples from the ancient world that illustrate the connection between land ownership, power, and political stability or instability. [Note: These examples must be drawn from different societies.]

3.         Drawing from the societies we’ve studied this semester, identify and discuss some of the ways in which the social unit of the family linked to power and authority in the ancient world. In your answer, identify different types of connection and provide at least one example of each. Your answer can include examples from different ancient societies.

4.       Discuss the various ways in which the position of women was established and maintained in the ancient world, drawing on examples from at least three societies. [Note: Athens and Sparta are both Greek, and thus represent variations within a single society. You can use them, but need to cite examples from two other ancient societies.]

5.                     Identify and discuss the way religion related to political order and social change in at least two classical societies. (Consider that religion could variously reinforce or challenge the existing order.)

10-Point Essay Questions (ca. 150-200 words ea.)

2.     Describe the basic tenets of Confucianism and Legalism, and explain how each was actually used politically during the Classical Age.

3.     Discuss the hoplite phalanx, explaining what it was and how it promoted social and political change in ancient Greece.

4.     Provide a concise comparison of Athens and Sparta, summarizing key differences and similarities between them.

5.     Discuss the impact of Alexander’s conquests. Your answer should describe their geographical scope, and address both short-term and long-term consequences

6.     Discuss the Struggle of the Orders. Your answer should explain what it was and detail the reforms that resulted from it
