PAPER PROPOSAL: Christian Mercy and BuddhistCompassion
Question:In a time of socialchallenges like racial and social discrimination that brought movements likeBlack Lives Matter, and the request to improve conditions for immigrantsamong others, what role does Buddhism and Christianity play in assisting withthe current crisis?
Relevanceof the project: While many people support Christianvalues or Buddhist views, the fact is that many wrong things are done in thename of religion. The treatment of peoplethat are different or think different and the disparity of the way societymistreats the black community (and minorities in general) creates a separationof the doctrines from most religions and the concept of compassion and mercytaught by those religions.
MainArguments: Both Buddhism and Christianity intheir core foundation talk about compassion and love for others. But even whenboth Buddhism and Christianity preach about compassion, people commit heinousacts upon one another in the name of religion. For example, a lot of Christians terrorize, abuse, discriminate and evenphysically assault members of the LBGTQ+ community simply due to their sexualorientation/preference.
Most ofthese issues have been largely ignored until just recently. When several black people were attacked andkilled by the police during the last few years, it created a movement topublicly expose what we didnt want to recognize as a society. This movements reflect what most of us know;that there is open discrimination and injustice according to your race, sex andeven your social and economic background. With the assistance of social media, the reflection of disparity andempathy should be a priority from a religious point of view.
Religionsshould serve and be effective to point the problems that affect the concept of compassionand mercy. They should be instruments ofgood and must help to focus service to a larger social justice that improverelationships between all mankind. Withthat in mind Christians and Buddhists should go to the core of their beliefsand emphasize social issues to uphold the better good without differentiatinganyone regardless of their skin color, physical disabilities, sexual orientation,amongst other things.
