In this second major writing assignment for the course, you will be drawing from the close-reading skills you’ve developed/practiced all semester to write an explication of a poem of your choosing. Your explication should focus specifically on “proving” why the poem you’ve chosen is “beautiful.”
Beauty is a very amorphous concept. We all have our own unique definition of what makes a piece of art beautiful. Your goal in this essay is to develop a specific criteria for evaluating the beauty poetry. What makes a poem beautiful? What elements in the language, the imagery, the tone, the cadence, the meter, the rhymes leads you to that conclusion? You can be as technical and prescriptive in your choice of criteria or as philosophical and flexible as you see fit.
It might help to think back to your first short writing assignment for the course, and the question that opened our work together: “What is poetry?” Is the artform (and success in the artform) defined by technical qualities in the language, like rhyme scheme and recognizable meter? Or is your definition of poetry more experiential—that is, based mostly on what a poem does to us, as opposed to the mechanics of how it’s made.
I imagine that most of your ideas about what makes a poem beautiful will fall somewhere in between these two extremes. But remember to try and be as specific as possible, even if you’re taking a more philosophical/experiential approach to assessing a poem’s beauty. What exactly is going on in the language to make us feel something? How do we distinguish between a line of language that is beautiful and a line of language that is not beautiful? What is your criteria for making the distinction?
