INSTRUCTIONS:

On Monday, December 6 and Wednesday, December 8 we will be screening the documentary
Coded Bias in class. You must: 1) take notes on the film; and 2) provide a philosophical
evaluation of the film by relating its content (either the whole or some part) to one of the authors
we have read (e.g. de Toqueville on the tyranny of the majority, Thoreau on civil disobedience,
or Berlin and Taylor on negative and positive liberty respectively, or Scanlon on freedom of
expression, or Pateman on participatory democracy, or MacKinnon on structural inequality and
free expression, or Marx on egoism and distributive justice, or Hart on rights, etc.).

NOTES ON THE MOVIE THAT I MADE

Notes for Coded Bias:

  • The girl that was into coding and went to MIT, so that she could learn how to make cool technology

  • She put computer vision software, onto her computer and discovered that facial recognition would have a hard time identifying her face.

  • When she started looking into the coding examples that were programmed into the software she found that the majority of the examples that the computers algorithms were given to learn, were males, and lighter-skinned individuals

  • Artificial intelligence is not actual intelligence, it is mathematics that is inputted into a computer.

  • There are hidden biases that are embedded and programmed into artificial intelligence

  • Algorithm: uses historical information to make a prediction bout the future.

  • They are testing out facial recognition in London, and it is very inaccurate.

  • Less than 14% of A.I. researchers are women

  • there was an algorithm in the USA which was based around the cost of healthcare, and since white people statistically had better health care insurance than black people, black people were found to be sicker than the white people at certain amounts of money owed

  • There are also problems that occur in the job hiring process, where algorithms have been to not have the right information given to the algorithm which causes the algorithm to be biased.

  • Algorithms were used for grading teachers, and in some cases, they tried to fire the teacher but were not given a reason on why they were fired, and when they took it to court the teacher won.

  • Algorithms, that were used to predict how likely or unlikely a person was to commit a crime were given to a judge, and it was found that black people were more likely to be labeled as a high risk.
