Listen to two versions of Dylan’s song “Blowin’ in the Wind” — the first from his second album The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan (1963), and the second a single performed by folk trio Peter, Paul and Mary.
“Blowin’ in the Wind” asks a series of rhetorical questions about life, values, peace and war; Dylan writes, “the answer… is blowing in the wind,” which is in itself a kind of question. Asking questions like this invites the listener to think about their own answers, and this designed interactivity increases the listener’s engagement with the song.
