Be sure to conduct your search ahead of time and put together some notes on how you will answer each question. You will not be conducting your search “live,” but rather you will have already done the search and know the answer to all the questions before you start recording. Your instructor will not watch any videos that go beyond the 10-minute mark and content beyond this point will not be evaluated for grading, so be sure to practice a couple of times before recording.

  • Explain why you used Google, Google Scholar, or the WCU Library. How did you ensure that you chose the right search engine for your topic?
  • Explain how you chose your search terms and how you refined them, if necessary.
  • Scan through the titles and URLs on the first page of results. Explain which sources were familiar to you and which were unfamiliar.
  • Describe the kinds of sources you found and their relative strengths. Do you have news articles, opinion pieces, blogs, websites, scholarly journal articles, books (or book chapters), or some other kind of source?
  • Explain how you used information beyond the title to better understand your sources. In a Google search, you will see snippets below each title that will give you an idea of the content of a website. When conducting a scholarly search, you will see additional information such as the journal or publisher, and you can click through to read an abstract, or short summary, of an article.
  • Use lateral reading to investigate your sources, including the authors, type of source, and publisher of the information (this might be a journal or a website). Show the tabs you opened and the extra searches you conducted.

After you have gathered the information, explain how you would prioritize a review of your search results. How would you ensure that you use high-quality, relevant sources when supporting your points?
