You will need to conduct research on your specific institution, using a combination of 7-10 resources (e.g., books, newspaper articles, news magazine articles, sociological journals, internet sites, videos, DVD’s, interviews, etc.). After you have conducted your research, you will analyze your information using the following questions as a guide:
- Discuss the history of your institution. How did it emerge? How did it come into existence?
- How do members of society perceive your institution?
- How do members of the institution perceive itself (its own institution)?
- How has the institution changed over time?
- What has caused various institutions to change?
- Discuss any stable features of the institution, that is, features that have not changed.
- As a way to better accommodate members of society, how would you improve your institution?
- Who are the major participants in the institution? What are their roles and statuses?
- Does your institution work better for some members of society (as opposed to others)?
Note: Answer all questions on separate slides. Your social conflict and functionalist analysis must appear on separate slides, as well. Social Conflict and Functionalism require detail; if necessary, use more than one slide. Finally, provide a concluding slide to wrap up your presentation.
You will then organize and submit your information in outline format on a PowerPoint (10 – 15 pages) or other slide/presentation program. Your slide presentation should include images, videos, charts and graphs where applicable.

The institution chosen for this research assignment is the media. The reason for choosing this institution is the power it wields in impacting the way people perceive various aspects of the realities they face. The media is a tool for both education and entertainment, which makes it a highly influential component of modern society (Adjin-Tettey, et al. 29). The media carries and delivers different types of entertainment, and thus influences what people see, listen to, or read. These aspects are usually reflections of social elements, which different communities idealize. Therefore, the media that surrounds people affects their perceptions and their aspirations.
One of the factors that make this institution interesting is its capacity to influence even the most subjective aspects of reality. One aspect that emerges as particularly susceptible to the influence of the media is the perception of beauty the entertainment sector has a long history of portraying beauty ideals that have caused controversy (Stokes et al 8). In the modern era, the media plays a particularly vital role in shaping beauty standards, which people in society tend to adopt. The analysis of this topic will provide an opportunity to reveal some of the ways the entertainment industry pushes beauty norms onto people. The analysis will also seek to uncover some of the reasons people are significantly susceptible to the influences of the mass media (Amaidas and Nigel 4). Indeed, the aims of the study will include the provision of awareness regarding the need for adopting critical and analytical predispositions towards the content aired by the media. The study will fulfill the urgent need to understand the nature of the media and entertainment and the reasons most people consume it without any significant analysis of its impacts.
