Discussion 1: Should prisoners be able to receive federal funds such as Pell grants to help defray the costs of taking college classes while they are in prison?
I do think that certain prisoners should be able receive federal funds such as the Pell grants to help defray the costs of taking college classes while in prison. I think this should be allowed because a lot of prisoners will not have a high enough income to afford a college level education and they deserve a fair chance just like everyone else. Although not all prisoners should be eligible to receive the grants. I think there should be a thorough vetting process for each applicant to determine if they will use the degree in an appropriate manner. For instance the vetting process should try to do its best to make sure that no people will not use a degree to try and improve their drug trafficking business or something like that. Another reason I believe they should be able to receive federal funding for college courses is because “earning an associate’s degree or becoming certified in a trade while incarcerated was related to higher pay, more hours, and less recidivism for former offenders after release” (Alarid & Reichel, n.d.). This quote from the textbook shows that prisoners who receive an associates degree have a much higher chance of getting a higher paying job and being able to succeed in normal society after their release. Overall I believe that certain select prisoners should be able to receive federal grants for college educations because it can increase their chance for success, decrease the likelihood of recidivism and it gives them a fair second chance at a good life after prison.

I think prisoners should be able to receive federal funding because they make no money in prison doing work, and it is unfair to them that they do not get paid enough when they want to try and get an education. It is also unfair that the people who do get funding toward college get to have higher-paying jobs to actually help pay for their tuition and room and books but inmates do not get paid anywhere close to subtitle. An article I read talked about a man who was hooked on taking college courses and bettering his life after prison and the article stated, “Kinzel’s story is included in a comprehensive new report from the Vera Institute of Justice and Georgetown Law’s Center on Poverty and Inequality, which encourages the government to take an important step toward expanding access to postsecondary education for incarcerated individuals: reinstate access to federal Pell Grants for eligible students behind bars. Doing so would lower recidivism, pump millions into local economies, and save state taxpayers hundreds of millions in correctional costs, advocates argue. “It is a common-sense investment,” says Vera’s Fred Patrick, “and a win-win for states, the country, and for incarcerated individuals, because they’re able to come home and thrive.” To Kinzel, this makes perfect sense. “I think formally incarcerated people, for the most part, are some of the hardest workers. If you give people the opportunity, nobody wants to go back to prison. Nobody wants to sell drugs and do all this grimy shit. It’s just sometimes, you don’t have a choice.”
