COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES AND HOW THIS UNIT RELATES TO YOUR COURSE This unit explores language and literacy learning and teaching. It is one of many units in the Master of Teaching that provide opportunities for students as pre-service teachers to prepare for their future employment as a graduate teacher in early childhood and primary settings. Students will develop skills in pedagogy and practice within the Syllabus area of English and in relation to Effective Communication in the Early Years Learning Framework. The knowledge and skills developed in the other units of study in the course can be applied in this unit and the understandings from this unit can be applied in Professional Experience units. This is a core unit for students in the Master of Teaching (Birth-5 Years / Birth-12 Years). It is offered on-campus as lectures and tutorials complemented by online components. As professional learners, the students will have engaged with the elements of a graduate teacher as described by the New South Wales Institute of Teachers, the accrediting organisation for the Master of Teaching Early Childhood course. This unit contributes most prominently to the following course graduate attributes: 1. Demonstrates understanding of contemporary early childhood and school education contexts and adopts a futures orientation. 2. Demonstrates competence in implementing professional and pedagogical knowledge to support children’s learning and development in early childhood settings and schools. 3. Understands complexity of social relationships and applies this to the formation of productive networks and partnerships with children, families and the community. 4. Understands and enacts activist leadership through problem setting, research, reflection, risk-taking and building resilience. Please download the attached file.
