In this assignment you will locate crime data in two national databases, then compare trends represented by two crime data graphs.

Then, you will describe five risk of death rates using national data, and discuss the use of rate calculations as opposed to numbers.

This assignment, like all written assignments, will be submitted through the plagiarism detection software Turnitin, in Canvas.

Submit a single (just one) Word document with all of these parts completed.

Part 1 (55%)

You will need to go to the  discussed in the video, and create your own spreadsheet table.  You can use the whole country, or a state of your choice.

You may then choose either the violent crime rates or property crime rates, but only rates!

  1. Analyze the same crime across 3 states 2009-2019 (for example Aggravated Assault in California, Illinois, and North Carolina. Download/export the file into Excel.
  2. Create a spreadsheet in Excel.  Manipulate the columns so that you have 3 columns, in the same order, in the same Excel file. Refer to the video  (Microsoft, n.d.) for guidance.
  3. Create a graph to compare the crime rates in the three states.
  4. Create a new chart and do this for another crime and 3 different states.
  5. Copy the two graphs and paste them into Word.
  6. Describe each chart, what it tells the reader.  Three sentences for each graph, or so.  Put some thought into these.  How do these states compare to the US rates? Why are rates so important?  What are the populations for each of the 6 states?

Part 2 (45%)

Go to the  noted in the Rates lecture. Calculate 5 risk of death rates and make 5 tables.  You may use any variation of year, cause, age categories, race, etc.  Don’t use age! (the table will be extremely long).  You may use age categories, though.  Mix it up, dont use the same demographic variables for all, nor the same cause of death. You can use the same year, might as well keep it the most recent if you do.  Dont use all the same variables except year though. Pick a cause with enough representation, those with very few data points get statistically squirrelly.

TIP: the tables from the CDC copy and paste nicely, you dont have to type out the data into a table you create in Word!  As long as the tables are manageable, and not huge and busy.  Use the same Word document as you did for the first part of this assignment.

  1. Make a table. It might be better to do 5 individual tables, depending on what you present. Be sure to include cause and whatever other variable variations you use.
  2. Write a sentence or two describing each row in your table, what the data are showing. Dont talk about anything it doesnt show, like hypothesizing why those results are found, this isnt a course in guessing games, just in data awareness.
  3. Discuss the necessity of using rates, if you only relied on numbers, what would be the issues with cases you selected?
