INSTRUCTIONS:

Today, major cities from New York to Los Angeles are vigorously enforcing laws against vagrancy, panhandling, and other quality-of-life crimes. This practice is based on the “broken windows” or zero tolerance theory of policing, which suggests that a reduction in minor crimes will lead to a decrease in violent ones. Discuss the relationship between zero tolerance policing and police discretion and then present an argument either advocating for or critical of the zero tolerance model. Please use specific examples to support your argument.

Hello everyone! For this week’s discussion board I would like to present my argument regarding the zero-tolerance policy. We’ve learnt that the zero-tolerance policy is a strategy that consists of law enforcement officers stopping, questioning, and frisking pedestrians or drivers who are suspected of acting in violation of the law, and arresting them for offenses whenever possible, typically for low-level crimes such as simple assault, shoplifting, or possessing marijuana. While zero-tolerance policing focuses on making stops and arrests to crack down on all types of disorders, police officers use police discretion when evaluating a situation in which they intervene and choose a course of action from a set of alternatives. Zero tolerance policing differs from problem-oriented policing, as zero tolerance doesn’t attempt to analyze the cause of problems. Therefore, for that reason, I do not support the zero-tolerance policy as it has not been deemed to cause significant changes in crimes.  I believe, if anything, it runs the risk of damaging police-community relations, both locally and even at the national level.

Zero tolerance policing and policing discretion have ways of being similar with each other.Zero tolerance policing is when law enforcement makes aA decision to ones action that they came across with and stand on the decision they make. For example if you get pulled over with an unregistered fire arm in the vehicle.

Back home in Fort Lauderdale there are a lot of crimes going on from as small j walking to as big as million dollar drug bust.Zero tolerance policing isn’t implied all the time when police come across people and situations that they face daily. With all the petty crimes going on across town it just waste the agencies time and takes away from them working on bigger and more cases that actually could have An affect on someones life positively. But if one did imply the zero tolerance affect according how they should it would show more signs of aggression and dominance.Me being from Florida and growing up in not the best neighborhood shows that zero tolerance is more enforced in the suburban neighborhoods.
