INSTRUCTIONS:
Today it is almost commonplace to hear physical police behavior described as police brutality, yet it is rare for police officers to actually be prosecuted much less convicted for these accusations.
What are some common instances where police are allowed to use force on an individual that are not popularly understood? Search the Internet and find an example (locally, nationally, or internationally) where police behavior became police brutality according to the letter of the law?
Classmate 1:
I think there are plenty of instances where law enforcement officers use excessive force. While officers believe that excessive force is justified, excessive force can easily turn into police brutality. In the academy, officers are trained with the shoot to kill mentality instead of simply shooting to apprehend or wound. One example where an officer prompted to use excessive force but the situation quickly shifted to police brutality is the case of Eric Garner. The responding officer placed Garner into a chokehold instead of restraining him with handcuffs, resulting in Garners death. Garner was selling illegal substances which prompted the officers to respond to the scene. The police officer who placed Garner into the chokehold misused his authority by using excessive force that was uncalled for.
Classmate 2:
there are many cases where the police get away with using excessive force. one way I remember is when the they were using tear gas to end some of the Black Lives Matter protest. I think this was very unnecessary because they were non violent protest but because the police had fear of it turning violent they used tear gas to shut it down. tear gas is very dangerous because it can cause blindness, chemical burns, and possibly death and if you are using something like that it is almost as bad as shooting the protesters in my opinion.
