In this assignment, you will develop a strong thesis about a film based on at least two reviews of that film. You should find a film that will be surprising and interesting. You can look up films by director, but it should be a film that has at least decent reviews. On a website such as rottentomatoes.com or metacritic.com you can find links to full reviews. You should find one review that you agree with and one with which you disagree, and explain why one reviewer has done a better job of understanding the film than the other. Your thesis statement, however, should offer at least some of your own original insight into the film. You will need to cite this source in proper MLA format. You will notice that this paper is significantly shorter than the other two. You should imagine that you are writing for a popular audience (like the critics whose work you will cite are).

Grading Criteria include:
– The paper should be surprising; structure your paper in a surprising (interesting) way, and come up with an argument that is somehow new. Your thesis should demonstrate your thoughtfulness and critical thinking ability. Your thesis should be made clear early on, preferably in the first paragraph, definitely on the first page. You should underline or italicize your thesis statement (which should be no more than one sentence) for maximum clarity.
– Your argument should be well supported; specific evidence will strengthen your argument.
– Writing concisely is an academic challenge; you should attend to the economy of words. Because the paper is brief, you must not waste time or space through wordiness and repetition.
– Proofread your paper carefully. Your paper should be free of grammatical/spelling errors.
– Your essay should have a strong introduction, body, and conclusion.
– Try not to follow a five-paragraph essay format, which usually scratches the surface of the issues. Instead, come up with an organic structure that is rhetorically powerful. You can do so by letting your thesis evolve throughout the course of your writing, instead of sticking with the initial static thesis.
