-Ta-Nehisi Coates’ “Letter to my Son” and Hilary Mantel’s “Royal Bodies.” In the spirit of the form, these essays both show the author thinking through a topic. They happen to be thinking through very different topics, but I do see some overlap. I’m interested to hear how you think they connect. Also keep in mind the “writerly decisions” that Coates and Mantel make throughout–what are the choices that define these essays?
In our conversation about Coates and Mantel, we thought about the choices they made (in language, form, content, tone, the examples they selected and the ones they did not) while crafting their texts. I want you to expand upon this idea in your culture diary this week.
In this entry (approx 300-400 words), analyze a writerly decision made by Coates or Mantel in their essays. (1) Articulate what this choice is, (2) formulate a claim on why the author made this choice, and (3) discuss whether you think their choice was effective. You should quote a passage from Coates or Mantel that exemplifies the writerly decision and demonstrate your ability to real closely and analyze the text.
