Your book talks about several types of defense mechanisms as a way to reduce anxiety.  We use them all the time, each one of us has go-to defenses, and our use of them is one way that our personalities differ (in other words, some of us may use denial a lot and others may use displacement). 
  • Give an example of a defense mechanism that youve used in your lifetime. 
  • Describe the situation, and explain the type of defense used.
  • When you experienced it, did you understand what you were doing?
