Write a one–page report on the following topic:
“Describe the fundamental interactions of neutrons with matter and how they relate to
measuring porosity in well–logging.”
In your writing:
(a) Describe the life of a high energy source neutron, from the time that it is born until it
is thermally captured. Draw a picture of this process that visualizes the interactions.
The pictures must be of high quality, and you can use PowerPoint (or some other
software) to make the pictures. You must caption each figure and append it at the end
of your report. You must also reference the figures from your text. Note: The figures
will not count towards the 1–page limit.
(b) You have once again the freedom to approach the topic however you see fit. Your
grading will primarily be based on your English writing skills. That said, you will have
to address the following questions: how are these fundamental interactions leveraged
to measure neutron porosity? What dictates the distance travelled by the neutron?
What do neutron porosity logs actually measure and why? Your report should have a
header, in which the report title, your name, PSU ID, and date are clearly stated.
