Urban Bridge is a proposal for designing a new bridgeconnecting two significant parts of Isfahan city. Isfahan is a city in centralIran known for its unique historic Iranian architecture and particularly urbanbridges. The bridges have been constructed since the 16th century across theZayandehrud, the largest river of the Iranian Plateau. By the time Isfahan hadbeen designated as the capital of Iran, building bridges became an importantcomponent of the urban expansion and urban landscape to facilitate socialinteractions and cultural events.
Due to the rising need for vehicle traffic in recentyears and the transformation of urban spaces, the spatial quality of the newbridges gradually deteriorated, and their function has been limited to merelylinking two destinations. As a result, the city has witnessed a lack ofhistorical identity and a distinctive aesthetic and functional character in designingnew bridges.
The Urban Bridge by Ashari Architects proposes a modular domepattern inspired by geometric divisions of Isfahans historic bridges. Throughlabyrinthine paths in both vertical and horizontal axis, the design providesvarious spatial experiences for visitors while introducing a contemporarytranslation of historic forms. Furthermore, it encourages social interactionsand recreational activities in order to preserve the identity of this historicalelement of the city.
