Competing needs arise within any organization as employees seek to meet their targets and leaders seek to meet company goals. As a leader, successful management of these goals requires establishing priorities and allocating resources accordingly.

Within a healthcare setting, the needs of the workforce, resources, and patients are often in conflict. Mandatory overtime, implementation of staffing ratios, use of unlicensed assisting personnel, and employer reductions of education benefits are examples of practices that might lead to conflicting needs in practice.

Leaders can contribute to both the problem and the solution through policies, action, and inaction. In this Assignment, you will further develop the white paper you began work on in Module 1 by addressing competing needs within your organization.

To Prepare:

Review the national healthcare issue/stressor you examined in your Assignment for Module 1, and review the analysis of the healthcare issue/stressor you selected.
Identify and review two evidence-based scholarly resources that focus on proposed policies/practices to apply to your selected healthcare issue/stressor.
Reflect on the feedback you received from your colleagues on your Discussion post regarding competing needs.
The Assignment (4-5 pages):

Developing Organizational Policies and Practices

Add a section to the paper you submitted in Module 1. The new section should address the following:

Identify and describe at least two competing needs impacting your selected healthcare issue/stressor.
Describe a relevant policy or practice in your organization that may influence your selected healthcare issue/stressor.
Critique the policy for ethical considerations, and explain the policy’s strengths and challenges in promoting ethics.
Recommend one or more policy or practice changes designed to balance the competing needs of resources, workers, and patients, while addressing any ethical shortcomings of the existing policies. Be specific and provide examples.
Cite evidence that informs the healthcare issue/stressor and/or the policies, and provide two scholarly resources in support of your policy or practice recommendations.
Due to the nature of this assignment, your instructor may require more than 7 days to provide you with quality feedback.

Health care refers to the prevention and treatment of diseases through the medical professional services, also it can be referred to as the improvement of health via the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, recovery or cure of illness. The provision of healthcare services to the general citizens of the nation is also faced with some issues that tend to derail it from achieving its goals. Some of this issues includes: Having very big data for the patients, the cybersecurity, invoicing and payment processing, price transparency and the effective payment model.

Among the mentioned health care issues, we are going to have a discussion on the price transparency and how this issue can affect our work setting. The patients and consumers are always disadvantaged when it comes to the lack of transparency around the price and cost of the healthcare products and services. Every one charges the price they feel it’s right for them without any consideration of the level of income and other factors as well such as poverty. It will be very important for the price transparency issue to be addressed for the following reasons:

1.) Better informed consumers and patients

2.) Better informed employers that help workers shop for value

3.) Improved ability for employers to monitor insurer effectiveness

The following work setting will be greatly affected for the above to be achieved for instance, we will need to come up with a national progremme system in place that will be constantly being updated on one central point on matters to do with prices, Doctors and patients will have to be taken to attend seminars from where they will be educated on the physical presence of the health products and advised on the recommended price to charge, the health care system can allow doctors to form unions whose goals will be to look after the transparency of the prices being charged in the market anytime there is price fluctuations. Open campaigns can be carried out with the idea of educating the most vulnerable groups so that everyone is part of the updates. Strict laws and punishment for any price transparency issue to be passed by the government of the day so that no one will not even have an idea of overcharging and exploiting the citizens on grounds of providing health care services and products

The health care system responded well to the work setting for instance, the national programmes in place is now controlling the prices, anybody can have an access to it at any time of the day for reference, the seminars bring together many doctors and patients who share the common interest, these when they return to their respective areas of work, they work as per agreement that they were given in those seminar hence getting rid of the price transparency issue, the laws laid to control the price has also been of great help, patient have full information about the health care services and products and they can sue anybody who may be having the ideas of taking advantage of them for instance when a patient visits and healthcare system and ask for their services, he/she will be expecting certain prices as per the law of the day.

Health care is becoming dynamic each new day due to the increasing diseases that are being witnessed, this will also trigger the shift to the use of more and advanced means of dealing with the diseases, more health care issues will continue to come as we move along this changes. The health care issues can only be minised to a certain level but cannot be completely removed from the system.

Analysis of a Pertinent Healthcare Issue: Upskilling

Introduction

The Healthcare system is a dynamic field that keeps on drastically evolving regarding new knowledge acquired from research. It is usually affected by many national healthcare stressors or issues, which require addressing, though some of them need urgent intervention. One of the most pertinent healthcare issues or stressors that affect and impact many healthcare institutions in the United States is upskilling of healthcare professionals. However, this paper will focus on nurses who work in healthcare organizations. Upskilling refers to retraining employees to acquire new and fresh skills to practice with ease in their specific fields. The recent developments, especially technological changes in and outside healthcare systems, have significantly necessitated workers like nurses to acquire upgraded skills. Upskilling is regarded as one of the most critical healthcare issues. Many healthcare workforces worldwide are grappling with the threat of redundancy by technologies like artificial intelligence when they do not use upskilling (Ross, 2019). The most affected nurses are those who never accessed technology in the course of delivering their nursing care.

Impact of upskilling in healthcare

Since the inception of upskilling in my healthcare organization, it has had an enormous impact on nursing practice. This has been a result of drastically emerging technologies in healthcare, which have become mandatory in nursing care, therapeutics, and diagnostics. Therefore, nurses have found themselves short of needed skills in delivering efficient and quality patient care in most cases. However, many healthcare organizations have the obligation of investing in retraining and upgrading nurses’ skills to keep up to date with new technological changes in healthcare. For instance, policymakers within my organization have created a training fund meant to train nurses and other healthcare practitioners to use the newly introduced electronic healthcare records (Teague, 2019). Upskilling in healthcare is regarded as new artificial intelligence-assisted telehealth interventions.

Areas of concern in healthcare

Many healthcare organizations need to invest in their employees ‘ abilities to remain competitive in the healthcare sector immensely. Failure to do so will render them ineffective in competing in the ever-dynamic healthcare marketplace across the world. Artificial intelligence, for instance, is becoming prominent in healthcare today. Thus, the ever-growing sophistication of new technologies in healthcare is becoming the driving force behind the need to upskill healthcare workers. The use of digital therapeutics has become an area of concern, in which healthcare technologies are replacing traditional disease treatment and management(Siwicki, 2019). Since clinical validations of digital therapeutics products and connection to medical devices have already been initiated by the FDA, there is a need for upskilling nurses by healthcare organizations.

Articles on upskilling issues in healthcare

According to Rimmer (2018), for doctors and nurses to effectively and successfully use emerging healthcare technologies, they must undergo retraining to upskill. This article focuses on doctors and nurses since they both face similar challenges. It states that urgent training is needed by nurses and doctors in areas like genomics, digital literacy, and artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms. It also says that training should be a must for all healthcare practitioners to cope with new healthcare technologies. Hence, doctors and nurses should receive similar treatment when it comes to training for upskilling.

On the other side, Fralic (2013) states that the healthcare system in the United States is drastically undergoing radical and monumental changes. Therefore, it is common knowledge changes always require re-strategizing and re-organizing to deliver efficient and quality healthcare services. Hence, upskilling is significant in keeping up with new healthcare technologies. In many organizations within the healthcare system, this exact situation has become portended; however, they have adopted a retraining approach to upskilling doctors, nurses, and other healthcare practitioners to cope with new healthcare technologies and continue offering adequate quality safe patient care.

Strategies to address the healthcare issue

Upskilling is inevitable in healthcare organizations. Therefore, it is essential to create effective strategies which will help address the impact of these issues in the organization. However, healthcare organizations can employ various techniques; they need to gradually introduce the emerging technologies to allow enough time for training and adaptation by the healthcare practitioners. Organizations need to make upskilling one of their policies and part of their organizational goals and objectives. The organizations should also budget for upskilling if they need to become successful in areas of technology within their institutions.

Moreover, at no point should upskilling be considered an afterthought in any organization(Teague, 2019; Ross, 2019). These strategies have an immense impact on the healthcare organization positively since they are mainly geared towards providing the organization a very competitive advantage over other healthcare organizations. Negatively, these strategies are time-consuming in terms of training, and they require a lot of resources, which means the organization will invest a lot of help.

Analysis of a Pertinent Healthcare Issue

The Quadruple Aim provides broad categories of goals to pursue to maintain and improve healthcare. Within each goal are many issues that, if addressed successfully, may have a positive impact on outcomes. For example, healthcare leaders are being tasked to shift from an emphasis on disease management often provided in an acute care setting to health promotion and disease prevention delivered in primary care settings. Efforts in this area can have significant positive impacts by reducing the need for primary healthcare and by reducing the stress on the healthcare system.

Changes in the industry only serve to stress what has always been true; namely, that the healthcare field has always faced significant challenges, and that goals to improve healthcare will always involve multiple stakeholders. This should not seem surprising given the circumstances. Indeed, when a growing population needs care, there are factors involved such as the demands of providing that care and the rising costs associated with healthcare. Generally, it is not surprising that the field of healthcare is an industry facing multifaceted issues that evolve over time.

In this module’s Discussion, you reviewed some healthcare issues/stressors and selected one for further review. For this Assignment, you will consider in more detail the healthcare issue/stressor you selected. You will also review research that addresses the issue/stressor and write a white paper to your organization’s leadership that addresses the issue/stressor you selected.

To Prepare:

· Review the national healthcare issues/stressors presented in the Resources and reflect on the national healthcare issue/stressor you selected for study.

· Reflect on the feedback you received from your colleagues on your Discussion post for the national healthcare issue/stressor you selected.

· Identify and review two additional scholarly resources (not included in the Resources for this module) that focus on change strategies implemented by healthcare organizations to address your selected national healthcare issue/stressor.

The Assignment (3-4 Pages):

Analysis of a Pertinent Healthcare Issue

Develop a 3- to 4-page paper, written to your organization’s leadership team, addressing your selected national healthcare issue/stressor and how it is impacting your work setting. Be sure to address the following:

· Describe the national healthcare issue/stressor you selected and its impact on your organization. Use organizational data to quantify the impact (if necessary, seek assistance from leadership or appropriate stakeholders in your organization).

· Provide a brief summary of the two articles you reviewed from outside resources on the national healthcare issue/stressor. Explain how the healthcare issue/stressor is being addressed in other organizations.

· Summarize the strategies used to address the organizational impact of national healthcare issues/stressors presented in the scholarly resources you selected. Explain how they may impact your organization both positively and negatively. Be specific and provide examples.

Looking Ahead

The paper you develop in Module 1 will be revisited and revised in Module 2. Review the Assignment instructions for Module 2 to prepare for your revised paper.
