The objective of this written assignment is to help you apply the information you have learned during the course to a specific ethical scenario. Your essay should provide an overview of the ethical dilemma, outline of the potential courses of action, and a justification for the action YOU would take in a similar situation (600-900 words i.e., 2-3 page).

Step 1Select a case study from the additional files attached to this assignment. *If you would like to select another case study (Bahamian related only), you must ask for permission from the professor.

Step 2. Describe the Case.

  1. Identify and describe the parties involved, their rights, their responsibilities.

  2. Identify and explain the salient ethical issues of the case.

  3. Identify the relevant factual issues, conceptual issues, social constraints, and any additional information necessary for an accurate understanding of the case.

Factual issues: What facts are known about a case? Are any aspects of the case are controversial? What relevant information is missing or unknown?

Conceptual issues: What is the meaning or applicability of an idea? For example, should something be considered a gift or a bribe?

Step 3. Determine potential options.

  1. Formulate at least three possible courses of action.
  2. Compare and contrast your options (a. Good/Bad Consequences, b. Nullify any rules, c. Expected outcomes, d. Benefits vs. Harm).
  3. Provide your own opinions; do not regurgitate others opinions.
  4. “Use your facts/sources to convince me of your ethical point of view”.

Step 4. Select and justify a course of action.

  1. Which course of action do you feel is most appropriate for this situation? (Meaning: Of the three potential options you listed in Step 3, which one would you choose?)

  2. Explain your answer. (Why did you choose that course of action?)

  3. Which ethical theory justifies your decision? How?

  4. Of the 4 guiding ethical principles (non-maleficence, beneficence, autonomy and justice), which one(s) seems most applicable to this case and why?

Step 5. Provide evidence for the ethical arguments you see presented in the study? (Support your opinion with evidence).

  1. Cite your sources and list in a Works Cited using APA style. Choose sources of substance. Should look at outside articles to have multiple sources (i.e. reading assignments/ required text).

Remember the object of this essay is to lay out and defend a particular decision about a controversial case. Thus, it is important that you take a position, even if you personally remain unsure about what you really think is ethically best. Your papers will be evaluated not in terms of whether I personally agrees with your ethical judgment about the case, but by how well you are able to articulate and argue for a moral judgment about the case using known facts and relevant ethical principles. Make certain to follow all directions/instructions for this assignment.

Format: This written essay should be typed using MS Word (save as a PDF), it should be between 2-3 pages, and should be double-spaced.
