(1) Based on the contents of the letter of James alone, what can be said about the author? Provide four statements about the author of this letter that are supportable by appeal to the letter alone. Where applicable, note the chapter and verse that gives you this information. To what extent do your observations support the traditional view that identifies James as the brother of Jesus? A good answer to the second half of this question will show some engagement with the information in our textbooks regarding this issue of authorship (150-200 words).
(2) In the first chapter, James discusses wisdom (see vv. 5-8 and 16-18) in relation to trials (vv. 2-5 and 12-15), the rich and poor (vv. 9-11), speech (vv. 19-21), and “doing the word” (vv. 22-25 and 26-27). Based on your reading, elaborate on James’ emphasis on “wisdom” and its resulting “wholeness” (or “integrity”) in a persons life in relation to one of these areas (trials, dealing with rich and poor, careful speech, doing the word. etc.). In other words, bring together the key concepts in chapter one through the lens of “wisdom” and the integrity that it practically produces (150-200 words).
