Task
In addition to refining their Introduction, Methods, Results, and Literature Cited, each group of students will complete an Abstract and Discussion.
**The following bullet points are meant to guide your thinking, and they generally are questions that you should answer in the course of writing your paper. DO NOT simply answer the questions in bulleted list format, but instead write your sections in paragraph form as they are in other scientific publications.
Abstract
In 250 words or less, summarize all parts of your paper. The following are important to include,
at least as brief mentions:
a.Background information: what is the context for your study?
b.Research question: what are you trying to learn?
c.Hypothesis
d.One-sentence summary of experiment
e.One-sentence summary of important results
f.Evaluation of hypothesis: were results consistent with what you expected? If not, provide
g.plausible explanation of your results
Discussion
1.Typically you would begin your discussion by evaluating your hypotheses.
a.Did your double mutants have the phenotype you expected?
b.Did your ratios of F2 offspring come out as expected?
2.If your predictions worked out as expected, remind the reader why your hypotheses should be true. [If anything worked as expected, call attention to your success!]
3.If your predictions did not work out as expected, provide a plausible explanation for why your results turned out the way they did.
a.If the double-mutant phenotype was different from your prediction, why do you think the flies looked the way they did? Back this up with support from your reference citations.
b.If the F2 flies did not come out in the ratios that you expected, what do you think explains this? How close were your ratios to the ones you expected (very far off, or not very far off)? Do you think your predictions were wrong, or do you think there were not enough flies, something went wrong with the crosses, etc.? What might you have done to improve the quality of your data?
4.Focusing more on your successes than your failures, what might you try for a next experiment? What new information could you learn from the experiment?
5.Finally, remind your reader about the big picture. Why are eye pigments important to study, and what important information did you learn about the way that pigments are made, or the way that multiple genes can be required to produce pigments?
