Social Class Assignment: Mini-Paper 2

Objectives:

  • To encourage you to consider the taken for granted knowledge necessary to survive in the different classes.
  • To reflect on the many different aspects of what it means to be in one particular social class over another and to discover which class you find yourself in.
  • To gain a deeper understanding of your family’s social class and place it conceptually into a broader sociological context.

Guidelines:

Please address the following three items in a 4-5 page short paper. Much of the paper is based on personal reflection. That said, if you are using outside material, please be sure to cite your sources properly (MLA style). Attach your completed questionnaire in item one below in an Appendix at the end of your paper.

  1. Please fill out the attached questionnaire titled “Knowledge of the Hidden Rules of Social Class: A Questionnaire,” which was developed by Patrick J. Ashton and adapted from Ruby K. Payne’s Book, A Framework for Understanding Poverty, 4th ed. (2005). The questionnaire contains three separate lists of items, titled “Surviving in Poverty,” “Functioning in the Middle Class,” and “Functioning in the Upper Class” respectively. Be sure to indicate the items that you definitely know how to do (today) from each list by highlighting it in yellow. Then, reflect on the items in the questionnaire and the social class in which you find yourself. Attach the list with highlighted items as an Appendix to your paper.
  2. Discuss how your family’s social class has been reproduced over time, or how your family has experienced either upward or downward mobility.
  3. Place your family’s experience in context of structural or systematic reasons rather than individual reasons.

This mini-paper is worth 12% of your total grade for this course. The paper should be 4-5 pages in length (12 point font), double spaced with standard one-inch margins.
