Question #1.
First, rank each of the following references in terms of its importance in the plot or in terms of the artistry of the author.
Please use the number 3 as a designation of the least important effect (or least artistic use) of the theme of war/conflict,
the number 2 as the rank to designate a reference with medium importance (or “middling” artistic use) of war/conflict in the novel, and
the number 1 as the most important effect (or the most artistic use) of war/conflict. Please explain your rankings.
Next choose any two of the following, and explain why two references (your choice from the list A-G below) are most definitely more important than any of the others in terms of the plot of the story in this novel.
A. The pre-1979 conflict between the Soviets and Afghanistan is referred to on page 112, with Laila being called the “Revolutionary Girl” because of her date of birth on April 27 in 1978.
B. The person who drove Laila, Tariq, and Babi to the Bamiyan Valley to see the huge statues of the Buddhas talks about Afghanistan’s history as a series of “one invader after another,” and Laila’s father agrees with this description (bottom of page 146).
C. Laila’s two older brothers died as they fought against the Soviets before the Soviets gained full control of Afghanistan in December of 1979.
D. When the Taliban, having captured Afghan cities from the Mujahideen, was about to enter the city of Kabul in 1996, Rasheed says “Let them come, . . . I, for one, will shower them with rose petals” (page 175).
E. The rocket blast destroyed Laila’s home and killed her parents in chapter 26 (page 192-194).
F. Laila’s mother decide that she can finally leave Kabul because a bullet passed right by Laila’s head (pages 186 and189).
G. Abdul Sharif lied to Laila about Tariq’s death in the hospital from injuries Tariq received when a rocket struck the lorry in which Tariq and other refugees were traveling to Pakistan (page 206).
Question #2.
A. Discuss two specific advantages of the presence of two wives in Rasheed’s household.
B. Discuss two specific disadvantages of the presence of two wives in Rasheed’s household.
C. Do you think that Mariam would have murdered Rasheed if she had been his sole wife? Explain your opinion.
Question #3.
According to a UN report, the percentage of women in Afghanistan who are physically abused at least once in their lifetime is “more than 50%” (“Domestic abuse: Women in Herat may survive coronavirus but not lockdown”). Keeping this statistic in mind, answer each of the following four questions.
After you have written an answer to each question, then somehow evaluate the level of effectiveness. For instance, you may compare or contrast the effectiveness of two pairings of the labeled items A-D, or you can create your own ranking system of symbols or numbers to individually evaluate all four of the items below without using comparison or contrast–it’s your creative choice. . . .
If you wish, you may also use your own idea of what you mean by “effective.” (If you take this option, please provide an explanation of what you mean by “effective.”) For example, “effective” could be defined in terms of subtlety (or lack of subtlety). In other words, this word “effective” does not necessarily need to carry its normal connotation of “positive.”
A. How effective was the death of Rasheed as a way to show one specific aspect of the character of Mariam (identify this specific character trait)?
B. How effective was the physical abuse that almost occurred to Mariam when Laila refused to have marital relations with Rasheed to reveal one specific aspect of Laila’s character (identify this specific character trait)?
C. How effective was the physical abuse of Mariam, Laila, and/or Aziza to show one specific aspect of Laila’s character (identify this specific character trait) after they were returned to Rasheed after their escape attempt?
D. How effective was one example of verbal abuse by Rasheed (your choice) to reveal one aspect of Rasheed’s character (identify this specific character trait)?
Question #4.
Which specific event in this novel was THE most dramatic/”keep-you-on-the-edge-of-your-seat” event in the whole novel? Explain your choice by referring to exactly how the author achieves this unforgettable drama or suspense. For example, was the event connected to one of your favorite themes in the book? Was it the timing of the event in the storyline? Was it the word choices? Was it your involvement (love or hate connection or love/hate connection) with one or more of the characters in this event? Was it an unexpectedly sudden event? Perhaps it was a bit of several of these possibilities, or perhaps your own idea of a possibility is not listed in this question. . . . Please feel free to add your own idea.
