Discussion: Political Leaders of World War II
The policies of Franklin D. Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, Benito Mussolini, Josef Stalin, and Adolf Hitler shaped the events surrounding World War II. Each had rather differing opinions and took specific actions to achieve his nations desired outcomes. One leaders decision is attributed to the start of World War II the deadliest, costliest war in history, with approximately 70 million casualties worldwide.
At this time in history, as any time in history, citizens looked to their leaders to protect them and ensure their prosperity. What is it that these World War II leaders promised and subsequently provided to their citizens during this time in history? In your opinion, were these leaders capable and effective? What made them so?
In this weeks Discussion, you will assess World War II leaders and the effectiveness of their policies, actions, and contributions.
To prepare for this Discussion:
- Review the Lukacs reading in this weeks Learning Resources to understand the context in which World War II leaders rose.
- Examine the policies, actions, and contributions of each world leader and their impact on the events of World War II. Use your completed World War II Political World Leaders Comparison Chart for reference.
- Choose who you believe to be the MOST effective leader during World War II. Also choose who you believe to be the LEAST effective leader during World War II. What is it about their policies, actions, and contributions that made them effective or ineffective?
- Reflect on the promise and actions of great world leaders. What characteristics made them stand out?

Much of the past few weeks has revolved around the West and the growing shadow of another world war. What though about the rest of the world? Assess the impact of the war on the countries not at the heart of World War II. How would the war affect European colonies for example, or non-aligned countries? How would this war inspire colonies across the world to seek their own independence, and did the war offer clues as to how independence would be best achieved?
