Over 800,000 people die due to suicide every yearand suicide is the second leading cause of death in 15-29 year olds (WHO, 2014, para 1). Suicide occurs in all regions of the world; therefore, this health topic affects everyone. Low- and middle-income countries have an estimated 75% of all suicides (WHO, 2014, 2:54). This YouTube video depicts personal dialogue from those directly affected by suicide showing a sister to a lost loved one describing how there was no access to help for her sister. Another clip shows a woman who attempted suicide two times in her life and how she struggled with getting and receiving help. Then it goes on to discuss the WHOs plan to reduce suicide.

The WHO published the first World Suicide Report in 2014 to raise awareness and education on suicide, ways to prevent suicide, and offer means to cope with losing a loved one to suicide. This report was also created to help encourage other countries to develop and implement suicide awareness and suicide prevention strategies. Dr. Daniel Chisholm explains that the World Suicide Report is used to help determine what nations can afford and what interventions are appropriate for a population. The hope is that there will be a national dialogue, strategy, and plans for suicide prevention worldwide.

I watched this video over three times to adequately take in all the information. When I heard this quote, I stopped everything I was doing and counted to forty; then, I prayed for a lost one. Dr. Lanny Berman said, every forty seconds, across this globe, someone dies by suicide (WHO, 2014, 2:22). Since the video was produced in 2014, the WHO has published that over 77% of global suicides occurred in low- and middle-income countries (WHO, 2021, para 1) in 2019. This means that the middle- to low-income populations are being MORE affected by suicide since the publishing of this report. However, the WHO is now reporting that more than 700,000 people die due to suicide every year (WHO, 2021, para 1), compared to 2014 when it was over 800,000 and instead of being the second leading cause of death in 15-29 year olds, suicide is now the fourth leading cause of death in that age bracket (WHO, 2021, para 2). There appears to be some positive progression in suicide prevention since 2014, which makes me feel relieved and delighted to see that a plans actions are coming to fruition, slowly and steadily.
