Asthma is one of the major chronic illnesses affecting individuals of all ages. When it is not controlled appropriately, asthma can lead to severe effects, and can even result in death. This chronic disease affects the lung airways and can be diagnosed through three diverse measures, including inflammation of the chronic airway, creating a flexible obstruction of airflow and enhancement of bronchial sensitivity (Mahmoudi, 2016). An individual with asthma experiences symptoms such as wheezing, coughing, tightness of the chest and breath shortness. However, based on the condition, the frequency and intensity differ significantly. Diagnosis of asthma still relies on the history of the patient in relation to the various symptoms.
According to the Health People 2030, the key objective with regards to asthma is to minimize the number of hospitalizations, emergency department visits and deaths (Healthypeople.gov, 2019). It should be noted that in every year, there are more than 14 million doctor’s visits, over 1.8 million room emergencies, and more than 430, 000 asthmatic patients are hospitalized. In this case, it means that more than 300 million individuals are affected by asthma across the world, and the deaths resulting from untreated asthma are increasing rapidly (CDC, 2019). Health People 2030 is looking forward to addressing this global issue and ensure that there are fewer cases of asthma. Besides, Healthy People 2030 aims to help patients with asthma to control and manage their chronic condition so that they are able to undertake their everyday activities.
The CDC in conjunction with many other health organizations is collaborating to achieve the aforementioned goals. Their efforts include providing financial support to train medical staff so that they can offer proper treatment, and ensuring that the community is educated about how they can manage chronic illnesses such as asthma. Moreover, the CDC is establishing policies to minimize air pollution, which is one of the risk factors affecting asthmatic patients (EPA, 2019).
