How have you shown a commitment to diversity, anti-racism, and equity, and what unique perspectives would you contribute to the data science profession?
Purpose of this essay: demonstrate a commitment to diversity, anti-racism, and equity through your unique perspective.
Diversity:
homeless outreach: had volunteers of different races in order to better communicate and understand the people they reach out to (some homeless people did not speak english as their native language, we had spanish speakers and chinese speakers in our group)
Bringing people from different backgrounds in order to get better ideas on how to do the outreach (we had volunteers who used to be homeless, they relate to the people more)
held community church events open to the public for anyone and everyone who is in need of support
Equity:
tutoring- low income families were qualified to get free lessons
homeless outreach- not all families needed the same thing. some families preferred toiletries, some families needed shoes, everyone had their own necessity, buying everyone the same thing was not the solution each person had to be accommodated with different things
Anti-racism:
held community church events open to the public for anyone and everyone who is in need of support
During homeless outreach a lot of the homeless population were not of the same race and ethnicity as me, but they are still human beings that I made close connections with and held meaningful conversations.
marginalized community members and low-income/homeless members in my community happen to be those of color and in order to provide racial equitable solutions, we provided support for them.
