Document Exercise 2: Pope Urban II: Speech at Clermont

Use: Pope Urban II: Speech at Clermont (two versions are included in one document file)

Instructions:

An important skill in working with primary sources is drawing real conclusions – generalizations and inferences that are based on the text but not merely identical with the quote(s) we could give as evidence.

Practice this in this small exercise. You will be randomly assigned one question. Use the version of the speech recorded by Robert the Monk, or Balderic of Dol, or both, as appropriate for the question you are assigned.

Explain in your own words (use full sentences, logically connected into a paragraph). When giving evidence from the text, you can quote briefly or just paraphrase. Either way, indicate where you are getting the evidence from by giving recorder’s name (Robert or Balderic – they don’t have surnames) and the paragraph number in parentheses. Do not use the editor’s introductory comments as evidence; they are not part of the document. Find all of your evidence in the document itself.

Before you start the Document Exercise: Make sure you understand the documents well.

This means reading carefully, looking up words you don’t know, and also ensuring that you’re familiar with the general context (these are the kinds of things you should be doing every time you approach a primary document unless you’re directly instructed otherwise). We will cover some of this context in class in Week 5, and being up to date with your textbook readings will help too, but it’s ultimately up to you to make sure that you fill in any background necessary to understand a document.

After you have prepared in this way: Start the Document Exercise itself.

You have one attempt, with a 20-minute time limit. Your answers must be your own. Do not use any wording or ideas from the internet, the textbook, or other sources in your assignment; anything you might have looked up, any notes you took in class, etc., were just for context, to help you understand the document well. In the Document Exercise, focus just on the Speech at Clermont document(s).
