The four readings of this module correspond to three basic approaches to domestic distributive justice. Rawls’ book has become the classical expression of a liberal approach to distributive justice. Most philosophers who identify as political liberals subscribe to something like Rawls’ approach. Nozick’s article, which would go on to form the core of a book, Anarchy, State and Utopia, that is widely considered the best expression of libertarian thought in political philosophy. Cohen’s articles give (very partial) expression to the socialist alternative. These three approaches are the most philosophically important approaches to the question of domestic distributive justice. What I want you to do for this essay is put their positions into your own words and say which you think is closest to being correct and why. By ‘put into your own words’ I mean explain the theories as you would to someone you knew who wasn’t aware of this debate, but is reasonably intelligent and well informed. I want you to focus on issues of distributive justice. Rawls in particular writes about a lot more than that. Basically when Rawls is talking about his Second Principle of Justice, he is talking about distributive justice. When he is talking about the First Principle of Justice he is talking about civil rights, not distributive justice. The Nozick and Cohen readings are pretty targeted on the distributive justice issues. Paper should be 2-4 pages double spaced. Normal font size and type. Normal margins and all that stuff.
