Task: Each group should identify a problem situation (HR problem) in an organisation that they are familiar with or they have access to-preferably an organisation where at least one group member works or has worked recently. It is acceptable to withhold the name of the chosen organisation, for example, you could use the name of the organisation as such ‘XYZ Company’. The focus has to be on an unresolved problem (only one problem). Groups of four/five will be formed during class in weeks 2/3.This task is designed to develop your ability to:• contribute fruitfully to a group task;• assess a HRM issue or problem as objectively as possible;• appreciate the potential of theory(ies)/concept(s) in managerial decision making and problem solving;• apply theory to ‘real life’;• take responsibility for resolving the identified problem or issue by developing justified recommendation(s) and designing a practical action plan of implementation (rather than merely making recommendations with no action plan). To support the findings of your analysis and justify your recommendation(s), you are required to use relevant HR literatures. Part 1 of this assessment is a written group report of 2500 words (worth 30 marks). Note: There are penalties for exceeding the word limit (5% above or below the given word limit is acceptable; references and appendices are not counted towards the total word counts). Beyond the 5% threshold, 1 mark will be deducted for every 10% exceed of the given word limit. This report is to address the following areas:• Provide a brief introduction to the organisation (it is acceptable to withhold the name of the organisation).• Describe the problem, as much as possible in terms of the observable or measurable symptoms it manifests, for example: employee unrest, frequent industrial action, high absenteeism, workplace bullying/harassment, low morale, loss of profit, sabotage etc. You would be aware of a HR problem/ issue either from the internal documents of the organisation being an employee of the organisation or from the company website, media release, newspaper reports etc. which would provide you with evidence to substantiate your claim of a HR problem in your chosen organisation.• The issue/problem should then be considered and analysed in terms of concepts/models/theories drawn from any topics studied as part of this subject. To give some examples, your group may choose to adopt different negotiation tactics, change the existing recruitment and selection method, or re-design jobs, or arrange special training program and so on. Try to choose the topic that seems to offer the most useful insights into the problem. Topics must be taken from the BU5912HRM course schedule. • Develop justified recommendation(s) and design a change program or set of activities and procedures (actual action plan) utilising some aspects of your analysis. The change program should be intended to solve or improve the situation. Please note you are not merely being asked for a list of recommendations. Note: It is not necessary to interview any managers/employees of an organisation or to distribute questionnaires to collected data to complete this project. You could gather secondary data/ information about the problem area from the internal or external documents of your chosen organisation. You may source information from a variety of sources such as company website, media release, recent newspaper reports, journal articles, HR magazines etc. Part 2 of this assessment is a group presentation of the project report to the class (worth 10 marks). The presentation schedule will be negotiated in class. The presentation should last between 20 and 30 minutes. Each member will present for more or less equal amount of time i.e., about 5-7 minutes each. An additional 8-10 minutes is available for questions and answers. Support your presentation with appropriate visuals such as power point slides, handouts, etc. Criteria used to grade this task.• The criteria used to asses each of the elements of this task are set out in the Appendix.• Task Assessor: Lecturer/Tutor• Suggested time to devote to this task;20 hours for Part 1, 4 hours for Part 2.• Submission details: The written group report and presentation slides are due to submit by 11.59 p.m. on the day that the report is presented to the class. Group report and presentation slides must be submitted via Moodle by the team leader ONLY. There are penalties for exceeding the word limit. Visual aids/ materials such as power point slides used in the presentation are required to submit via a Moodle submission link as a separate document. The report must have a cover page containing the name and student number of each group member and the report must also be correctly and adequately referenced using APA referencing style. A template of report structure will be available on Moodle and be discussed in tutorial to guide your group report and presentation preparation. • Feedback and return of work.
