Lyric poetry has an ancient connection to music: the earliest poems were meant to be sung, and the word “lyric” refers to the ancient Greek musical instrument known as a lyre. Most modern poems are meant to be read rather than sung, but many have been written about the experience of listening to some form of music. Consider the following: William Wordsworth’s “The Solitary Reaper” (1807), D.H. Lawrence’s “Piano” (1918), Langston Hughes’ “The Weary Blues” (1925), Kwame Dawes’ “Trickster III” (1996), Kathryn Nuernberger’s “The Sound of Music” (2011), Naomi Shahab Nye’s “Song Book” (2014); Emilie Buchwald’s “My Mother’s Music” (2016), and Tracy K. Smith’s “Wade in the Water” (2018). Choose two of these poems and compare their approach to the subject of music. In the intro paragraph of the essay, give a brief overview of each poem and tell the reader how you plan to compare them. In organizing your comparison, you could consider such questions as: • Who is the speaker? Who is being addressed? • What is the relationship between the speaker of the poem and the music or musical performer? • Is the poem about one single moment in time or multiple moments? • Which activities are emphasized—passive listening, active performance, or both? Is the poem about vocal or instrumental performance, or both? • What kind of language does the poet use? (For example, is there a reliance on descriptive adjectives?) • Does the poet rely on senses other than hearing? • Does the poet use metaphors? If so, for what purpose? • What moods or feelings are evoked? • Is there a timeline or story structure in the poem? (Which verb tenses are used— past, present, or future?) • How is the poet using poetic form? (Is this in free verse? Regular stanzas?) • What ideas are associated with music in each case? What does the focus on music enable the poet to write about?
