Final Exam: The Beatles on LBJ

Freshman Composition

Professor Andrade

Nowhere Man by the Beatles

He’s a real nowhere man

Sitting in his nowhere land

Making all his nowhere plans for nobody

Doesn’t have a point of view

Knows not where he’s going to

Isn’t he a bit like you and me?

Nowhere man please listen

You don’t know what you’re missing

Nowhere man, the world is at your command

He’s as blind as he can be

Just sees what he wants to see

Nowhere man, can you see me at all

Nowhere man don’t worry

Take your time, don’t hurry

Leave it all ’til somebody else

Lends you a hand

Ah, la, la, la, la

Doesn’t have a point of view

Knows not where he’s going to

Isn’t he a bit like you and me?

Nowhere man please listen

You don’t know what you’re missing

Nowhere man, the world is at your command

Ah, la, la, la, la

He’s a real nowhere man

Sitting in his nowhere land

Making all his nowhere plans for nobody

Making all his nowhere plans for nobody

Making all his nowhere plans for nobody

The English band the Beatles had a hit single in early 1966, hitting #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts with Nowhere Man, a song written by John Lennon. It was the first song by the band that was not about love, sex and/or dancing. Lennon explained in a later interview that, while the song is about his creative exhaustion during the making of the bands Rubber Soul album, the then-President of the United States was his true inspiration for the lyrics. Indeed, Lyndon B. Johnson is the real Nowhere Man.

Question: How is Nowhere Man about Lyndon Baines Johnson in 64-66? Using Youngs The Vietnam Wars and our documentaries, link LBJs specific actions to Lennons specific words.
